I have wine glasses that hold 6 oz. and glasses that hold 12 oz. Filling the 6oz full and 12 oz half full, I have come to realize that the red wine tastes better out of the 12 oz glasses (same red wind - same bottle even). Can that be true and if, what is the reason?

I don't really know why it tastes different but it is not your imagination.

There are different size glasses for different wines. Some wines (such as most reds) improve in taste after they 'breath' a little. Thus a larger glass provides some of that 'breathing room' by providing a larger surface area.

Next time you get a red wine, open the bottle and take a sample immediately. Then allow the bottle to sit open to room are for about 10 minutes and take another sample. Then put some in your larger glass and swirl it around and put your nose inside to smell the fragrences. Then taste it again.

You will find in each of the above cases, the taste is a bit different and hopefully better each time.

Good luck and enjoy your wine!

It's not your imagination. There are even different wine glasses for different wines to enhance the flavors. Also, red wine needs to breathe -in general. The air smooths out the tannin acids of younger wines -sort of a pre-mature aging. The larger the glass the more air. Try a red wine with artichokes to see a real change.

Yes, the wine breathesmore in a larger glass, particularly one with a bigger opening at the top. This allows the wine to open up more creating a different flavor than drinking it out of a glass with a smaller opening. I love drinking red wine out of a large thin rimmed glass... mmmmm

Large glasses allow the wine to breath easier and faster due the large surface area. Oxidation occurs and the flavors come out. That is why many places pour wine in a decanter before serving.

Oh wow, people are insane on here. Ok, listen to me on this. 1 - Many cultures believe that 1 glass a day is really ok when you are pregnant. Our western culture does not. Keep this in mind...many people from Europe answer on here, and things are done differently over there. 2 - No one knows how much booze can cause FASD. Why? Because they dont do these types of tests on babies in the womb lol. Using unborn babies as 'lab rats' is not considered ethical yet. They most likely think it is caused during the actual formation of the brain, and the alcohol inhibites the growth, thus FASD. They dont know forsure yet though. So, 1 glass might do it. 1000 glasses might do it. No one will really ever know, so in our culture, we 'ere on the side of reason.

yes it does. when red wine breathes more (large glass) it tastes better. That is why they reccommend putting your red wine in a decanter before serving it... to let it breathe before drinking it.
