Working as a directional driller offshore back in the 1980's. The pay was great, the hours were crummy (I was out 300 days a year).

The people I met all had interesting stories. Some were 8th grade drop outs, others had PHD's and were looking for adventure in their lives.

On any given day, you could be killed or maimed in an accident (it was offshore that I learned that heavy metal objects do not have a conscious). We entertained ourselves pranking each other.

My favorite was to bet a hand that he could not hold a 100# sack of powdered bentonite over his head for five minutes. About 3 minutes into it, somebody would come up behind him and slash the bag, emptying the contents on the victim.

It was fun work, dangerous work, but not the work I relished (I had 7 accidents or injuries in about a 4 year span that drove me out).
