to go toward our trip to St. Lucia in 2009? We're not looking for money but since our family says it's hard to buy for us, should we let them know of our intentions?

You have to be careful here or it could sound like you are being pushy or ungrateful.
If someone asks you what you want or need, then I would give them this answer. You may also tell other family members, if someone asks, then that is what you want.
I suggest opening up a saving account just for the trip.
Good Luck! Bon voyage!

In a word - you don't. It's never in good taste.

Telling someone what to give them is gauche for any occasion.

And telling someone they can give you $$ towards YOUR Caribbean vacation - is really out of line.

About all you can do is tighten your own belts and give up a few luxuries so you can afford the trip on your own. For instance - pocketing the cost of that $5.99 late every weekday morning adds up to over $100 per month - that could go into your St. Lucia fund? What other "un-necessities" can you find within your budget to cover the costs of your vacation by yourselves?

Why don't you set up a Paypal account for your trip fund, and send out an email to everyone to let them know that's what you'd like for any christmas/birthday gifts? That might be a little less abrasive than calling each one up and telling them.

That would be tacky, tacky, tacky. Save for the trip yourselves. Work an extra part time job if you need to.

Tell them, but don't limit them to finiancial donations. Mention items you may want to take with but do not have - luggage, clothes, anything, camera, guidbooks, snorkle lessons, anything.
