my hair is like a medium brown and ive been trying to go lighter, but not drastic like blonde. every time i dye my hair my self it fades to a red color. but at the salon it stays perfect. cant afford to go to salon anymore. i want it to be like a caramel color any suggestions

the reason your hair returns to a reddish color has to do with underlying pigments. In your brown hair your underlying pigment is red/ red orange. I'd suggest getting some caramel highlights instead of all over color. That way you can get it professionally done, but only need it retouched every6-10 weeks depending on your hair growth and personal tolerance for outgrowth.
If you do your hair at home stay within one shade lighter or darker. Go with neutral or you can try an ashier tone to fight the red. It is only a perfect science when formulated in the salon for your hair specifically, and what exists on your hair already. Color doesn't lift color. Only lightener does.

You could start with a gradual dye process. One lighter shade at a time.

go ahead and dye it caramel. then use pantene color stay. it works great... i dyed mine 2 months ago. the roots haven't shown and it is still the same color....
