Domestic light beers are usually between 3.5% and 4.5%

Your 5.9 % by volume is considerably more potent than the average domestic beer which runs between 3.5 and 4.5 % by volume. The alcohol volume for beers of Great Britain and Ireland are around the 5% mark.

An average Beer or Lager is around 4% (Carling, Tetleys). So called strong or export beers range from 5% up to around 12% for really strong.

Beer that has less than 5.5% alcohol in it is just water.
Try some of the Belgian "triple" beers (around 12%).
Knowing a bit about Americans, they might be banned.

that's not all that strong, you must have had several to be knocked out, wines are at least double that (some beers are as well, like barley wines, imperial stouts, belgian tripels)
