As far as I know....it's kind of like being a good role model, someone to guide them spiritually. Kind of like a rock they can turn to. That is a huge compliment that someone wants you to be their Godmother, that means they trust you with their child. That's awesome. Just be there for them spiritually and emotionally....and of course you can play with their toys with them and color with them. But be a good, respectable and loving figure in their lives.

I was asked to be a godmother a few years ago and did some research. Officially, the role of the godparent is to guide the child spiritually and religiously. Seeing that, in this more enlightened era that we live in, most parents choose which direction their children will go in that regard, your role as spiritual guide is pretty much obsolete. So, beyond that, your role is to be that child's go-to person. The best way to achieve that is to be warm and caring and "special". I've found that the best way to be special is to be an exceptional "gift" giver. If the child will be spoiled by everyone else, perhaps you can spend unique time with that child as your gift. If the child doesn't need that, perhaps you can plan to take the child for a weekend and do something creative, like a day built around all the things that child adores. You wouldn't even have to spend a dime. Ultimately, you want to be like a second parent to the child who will one day be a teenager and then an adult. You build that special relationship over time and, hopefully, one day that child will come to you in times of crisis and advice-seeking. Always be thinking of the unique things you can do to set you apart from the rest of the adults in her life. For me, because my goddaughter doesn't come from an affluent family and because we can afford to, I spoil her with gifts on special days. I saw her a few months ago, brought her gifts (which her parents have taught her well to be VERY grateful for - thank God) and she now tells everyone she meets about her "fairy godmother victoria". It's a great thing your friend has asked you to do. My goddaughter is 7 years old, and I still proudly tell people that I'm her godmother. Enjoy your new role!!!

I think it depends on what church you go to. For some people the godparents are the people they have chosen to be their child's guardian in the event that both parents die. For others the godparent is someone who stand up with the child when he/she is christened and promises to help raise the child in a Christian environment. Unless it is put in a will that you will be the guardian, you are not legally obligated to take the child if the parents die. It would be good to ask your friend exactly what will be expected of you as the godmother. For most people it is a way for your best friend to say that you mean a lot to her and she wants you to have a role in her child's life.

Godmother Duties

It all depends on the church that one belongs to.
As Catholics, our role of Godparent means that we are to assist the child in their religious upbringing. :) It doesn't mean that we are in charge of the child after the parents pass away.

Well...it's SUPPOSED to mean that you help raise the child in the parents chosen religion. Like make sure that they have all the spiritual help to make sure that they raise their child in a Godly way.

Some people "assume" it means that when the parents die that you automatically get custody of the child. That's not true. The only way you would get custody is if the parents were to name you in their will as a guardian.

In today's world...and if the couple isn't necessarily religious...it simply means that they hold you in high regard...and would like you to help influence their child. And yes, it could also mean that you get to spoil them rotten and babysit often. You can also ask your friend that asked you what her specific ideas about you being Godmother means to her. She could have totally different ideas than anyone of us here.

Good luck.

For the most part you're kinda like an aunt. However making you a godparent essentually means that if by some chance one or both of the parents die you and the godfather will share responsibility of the child.

I beleive that it varies among families, religion, and ethnic background. To me and my background, upbringing, ect... a Godparent is someone that is appointed to help teach your children in the ways of the Lord and help bring them up in the church. Outside of that it is someone you would expect to care for your children if you and your spouse passed, a legal gardian persay! Again it differs among all people and families!

I'm a godparent for my cousins and it doesn't really mean much. You are supposed to support them spiritually in their life and eventually guide them to making a personal committment to Jesus (without this the whole baptism is pointless). Buy them birthday presents and Christmas presents. :-) Because you are their godparent you can get away with buying stuff like "My first Bible."
