No. But if you are flying you will need photographic id...eg. a drivers license.
If you are going by boat I don't think they check. They certainly don't from Stranraer to Belfast anyway.

No, but it makes life a hell of a lot easier at the airport if you take it anyway. Since 9/11, airlines have increased their security a lot so although by law you have never needed a passport to travel between the UK and Ireland and vice versa, you do need to show some kind of form of identity when you check in - and here's the rub - it has to be PHOTOGRAPHIC ID, which pretty much limits you to either an official National Identity card (the UK doesn't have them - yet - I don't know about Eire), Photo Driving Licence or your Passport.

Life is a bit easier at the ferry terminals as they're not so paranoid about ID. But generally the same rule applies - if you have one, take it. Life will be easier in the long run!!

You may go through passport control in England. I fly a lot between Dublin and England and have been asked by the authorities for a passport both in Dublin on the way in and in the English airports. Just get a passport you may want to travel to other countries.

You need a passport to fly. For the ferries, just a photo ID will do, like your driver's licence.

I've been to Ireland on the Ferry from the UK (South Wales) and we weren't even asked for our passports when we got off the ferry in Ireland! I thnk you need to have it with you though just in case.

If you are flying, then yes.

Although a driving license will do if you were born in the UK or Ireland.

If you are going by ferry, then no.
