I'd rather deal with the original creditor. The collection agency said it would be 5 weeks before the account is cleared with them. but by that time they will have reported me to the credit bureau. If i pay it at the end of the month can they still screw me.

It really depends on the original creditor. Sometimes they wash their hands of it and say "it's in colections now, deal with them" but sometimes they will take the payment from you. if they take your payment, you need to make sure you get a paid or settled in full letter for your records, and make sure you ask the original creditor to call the collection agency to report the account paid, so it can be removed from their office, and you stop getting calls and letters. I would still fax a copy of the paid in full letter to the collection agency as soon as you get it from the original creditor, so you know they have been made aware that the account is paid.

Many times the original creditor will not be willing to deal with you because they have sold the debt to a collection agency. You can always call them and see what you can work out though. Seems logical that they would prefer to have the whole amount themselves and save on the collection agency fee.

Once it goes to a collection agency the original creditor has nothing to do with the process, so you're stuck dealing with the collection agency.

I agree with louie depends on the creditor. I read somewhere that its best to deal with the original creditors anyway. Make sure you get it in writing so that if they do screw you...you will have copies. to send in.

No because they have basically sold the debt to the collection agency for penny's on the dollar, and the agency now owns the debt.
