It is different state, and these regulations are commonly refered to as "blue laws" though sometimes that's just a general term for other regulations.
In puritanical New England, often it was originally for religious reasons, I guess so you couldn't show up to church tanked (because let's face it, if you had to go to church and didn't want to, going drunk would be much more fun).
For the state of New York, most stores closed on Sunday not because there was a Sunday law, but NY liquor store licenses were only good 6 days a week. It didn't matter which day it was, but one day a week you had to be closed. Almost all places chose Sunday, as it fits in to the expected schedule, but some would purposely choose to close on Monday, to take advantage of desperate Sunday drinkers. New York recently ditched this regulation and now we can buy booze any day of the week.
You might want to ask your local store if they are closed on Sunday because the law says the must close on that day, or if they close Sunday because of the one day rule. If the latter is the case, snoop around the area for the one that opens Sunday.

Depends on where you live. Many places you can after noon when the conservatives felt it was safe to sell it because you had already been to church. This goes back to the time when Sunday was reserved for church and none of the stores were even open much less the taverns.

follow you territory rules.
Maybe someday, change will happen in your community.

Because "Separation of Church and State" is a load of dung here in the US. It is slowly changing though. You can usually buy beer on Sundays and in many places, they are selling wine now (OH and MI). Now put your beer down and get to church!
