From what I can gather about atheism. Its a belief in "nothing." There is NO real reason as to why you're here. Why you exist. There's no significant purpose or meaing to this life. There's nothin' beyong this realm.Life is random.Religion,God. Pfff, its all nothing, nonsense!

Be an atheist and that's mean your smarter. Ultimately aren't I taking my belief out of nothing and putting it into nothing?Because atheism is a belief is it not?Its not neutral and down the line. Hitchens,Dawkins,Maher,Harris ect. They ARE trying to prove something. There is NOTHING.So to go from believeing nothing("God") to believeing nothing(atheism)what's the selling point?Isn't everything at the end just pointless?Do I really understand anymore about this life or smarter just because I don't believe in God? It just seem's like I'd just be against something not for anything.

Now I'm not of any orgainzed faith or religion. Not trying slam atheist.Just asking questions.

Thoughts?

AH, THIS QUESTION WAS FIRE STARTER WASN'T IT?!

I SEE I HAVE OFFENED A LOT OF YOU WITH THE BELIEVEING "NOTING" CLAIM. WHEN I SAY NOTHING, I MEAN THERE IS NO REAL PURPOSE AS TO WHY WE LIVE. BELIEVERS FEEL THERE IS A CERTAIN PURPOSE FOR WHY WE'RE HERE. THAT'S WHAT I MEAN.

BUT I'M PROBABLY DIGGING A DEEPER HOLE AREN'T I.

I REALLY AM IGNORANT TO THIS TOPIC. . .

SORRY. . .

WHEN I SAY "NOTHING" I DON'T MEAN THAT YOU DON'T HAVE VALUES IN YOUR LIFE. NOT WHAT I MEAN!!

Wow!! Touchy subject here on Q&A. This is one of those questions that I don't ask because I know that I'd get slammed and I really dont feel that I know enough about it. Most people don't understand that your only trying to find opinions and that your not sticking up for any religion or non religion. Good luck on this!!

Atheism most certainly is a belief that there is no God and can be no God. Which means that there is no ultimate justice and therefore no ultimate purpose to life. Morality is simply an arbitrary set of imposed or voluntarily accepted rules. You are exactly right, that for an atheist, there can be no significant purpose or meaning to this life. If this life is all there is, then what is the point? Each day, life just gets worse -- our bodies age, break down and we get a little closer to the day where we die. The best our lives can be is always yesterday. Sure, there can be temporary events that may raise our standard of living for awhile, a relationship, or whatever, but it's just temporary. We still get older every day and we get closer to death every day. If this is all there is, what point is there? Why try to be a 'good' person? How does being a 'good' person help you when you are taken advantage of by someone who isn't a 'good' person? How many criminals get away with horrible crimes? What about their victims? If atheism is correct, what justice is there for these victims? What hope is there with atheism? Hope in relationships? People will always let you down at some point, sometimes in really hard ways. In a job? And what happens when you lose that job? Do you put your faith in yourself? Are you always able to change your circumstances to benefit you, give yourself satisfaction, or ensure that you always are treated justly?

And in the end, on the day that you die, having lived for yourself and whatever purpose you have tried to find for this life, what if you discover that you've been wrong? What if there is an ultimate Judge and what if there is Someone who will hold you and everyone else accountable for their actions? What if this life is just the beginning of our eternal lives? What if you have to stand before a holy, righteous God who will hold you accountable, not to our standards, but to His?

There is no selling point. You're completely missing the point of atheism. There's nothing attractive about it, other than it is reality. And furthermore, being an atheist doesn't mean you believe in nothing. It just means that you lack a belief in a deity. It isn't a choice we make. It is a conclusion we have no choice but to reach after evaluating the evidence (or in the case of God, the lack of evidence) available.

edit: Good answer, Socrates.

Your impressions of atheism are off. Atheism is not a belief but a lack thereof. I am an atheist because I feel it is the truth. That's the selling point.

atheism is simply the lack of belief in god. We can believe in lots of other things

None of your ranting proves your god exists. All I'm saying is that if you want me to believe in something as improbable as a god could you please prove it exists first.

If it's any help - imagine living in a world were people genuinely believed that Santa Claus really did exist and insisted that you had to also believe that Santa Claus really did exist or you were a terrible bad person who believe in nothing at all.

Or please tell me why I have to believe in *your* god but I can be atheistic about all the other of thousands of gods out there

Atheism is just not believing in gods. It is NOT belief in nothing. I believe in many things.

None of the things you said are true. You are lying about atheists. You lie about what I believe. You are slamming atheists then you lie saying you are not trying to slam atheists. If you want to lie and slam us, fine but at least try to be honest about it.

The selling point of atheism is honesty. Obviously something you have no familiarity with.

Because if there is no God, than you aren't accountable to Him or anyone, and you are the master of your own fate.

And I agree - I fail to see how it makes a person any smarter than a Christian. Sure, some Christians are a tad gullible, but I also know quite a few who are very smart (my own hubby, for example, is freaking SMART!!! the stuff that man can understand and do just blows my mind....). I don't think it has much to do with intelligence at all - I think perhaps pride plays a bigger part in it. I mean, how many times do you hear atheists say that Christians aren't very smart, or that we're weak-minded or brainwashed? All the time. That smacks of pride IMO.

Atheist is a LACK of belief, not a belief IN. But I get your point.
There is no selling point. Sort of like paganism. You either are or your not.
Lack in a belief in an eternal afterlife doesn't make this life worth less. I have an odd view of an afterlife, even for a Heathen. I doubt an eternal after life, but I do believe we have it in our bloodlines. Our soul is in our DNA and we pass that to our children. We live on through them. Our ancestors live through us. As far as were I go when I die, I learn when I die. THat being said, I live life for NOW. It doesn't bother me that I might "cease to exist". I hope I go to my ancestors, to the gods. But if I don't, that doesn't make my life worth less. For me it makes it more. I have NOW. And I want to make the most of it for me and my kids. I pass that to them. I give them my morals, my faiths (in everything not just my reigion) I give them a basis to go out into the world to be good people. For me, that's worth a lot.
But hey, that's just me.

There is no selling point to atheism. It's just reality and, yes, it sucks. Anyway, we dont want to convert you, we're fine with you believe whatever you want to believe, just don't try to make laws that we have to abide by based on your beliefs and don't try to force kids into your religion by lying to them about what is proven and what isn't.

Atheism is the belief in nothing? Funny, I thought it was the lack of a belief in god.
