his job has been moving him from state to state for the past 6 months. conneticut was the last job site he was working at when he got laid off and he'd only been there for a few months. the company he works for is based in missouri I think. he had direct deposit for his checks but i think they were issued in missouri

Jennifer, where did his paychecks come from (Nevada or CT) and which state was withholding income tax?

Employment laws get complicated fast when dealing with work across state lines. If you are living in CT, I would assume that you are filing CT income taxes and that you are considered a CT resident/employee. If true, that would mean you go and try to file for CT unemployment.

The biggest problem you may have is that you were not in CT long enough to qualify for their unemployment. Again, these rules vary state to state.

Without more info, none of the Yahooligans will be able to give you an answer that is based in reality.

First of all, saulg21 is wrong - you absolutely CAN collect unemployment if you are laid off. You can file in the state in which you live. Call your local unemployment office - they can walk you through the steps and answer any of your questions.

He laid laid on his job? Hmmm, and what kind of job is that? I think I need to go to Conneticut too, lol.

But all kidding aside. He can't file for unemployment unless he was fired and he has to file in the state it happened. So unless he hears those two magic words,it's not going to happen.

He should file where he actually lives (sounds like NV) and show the jobs in the different states - the NV unemployment comp will contact whatever states need to be contacted.
