I expect my divorce to be finalized in December maybe late November. Can I claim married status for this year on next years taxes?

No, if the divorce is granted by December 31, you are considered single for the year and will file that way. You said you don't have children, so unless you have a parent who is a dependent, or a closely related dependent who lives with you, you aren't eligible to file as head of household.

To file as married you have to be, well, married. If you and the soon to be ex are on speaking terms you should get together and rough out whether it would be better for each to be single or both to be married on December 31 then stall the divorce a while if married is better.
