But if I say it, how can it be wrong?

Actually, people forget that fact all the time. 1. You can't get pregnant if you do it standing up. 2. Deflating your tires a little gets you better gas mileage. 3. Politicians have our best interests at heart. etc., etc., etc. And some people continue to believe religious "facts" because that is what they were raised to believe. Very few humans are able to look objectively at their beliefs to see whether they have a factual basis, especially if one of the beliefs depends on a being that cannot be proven or seen. And I include myself in this group, not religiously but as an emotional human being.

No I don't. I also never forget that just because I don;t agree with something doesn't make it untrue.

Edit regarding the link: It would be interesting to ask that person when exactly he thought ancient civilizations of Rome, Egypt, and Greece existed. They all used Astronomy. He has the 1000 right, unfortunately for him it was 1000 BCE

And saying something does or did not exist, doesn't make it go away! Your link stated that 1000 years ago man knew nothing about the planets. That is so wrong!

The Ancient Mayan, Polynesian, Chinese, Egyptians all had a study of cosmology. The idea that our ancestors were stupid, is just not true.

I wonder if a "fact" is, of necessity, true. I'm going to look it up.

Yup, I was right. A "fact" doesn't have to be true.

From Merriam Websters (admittedly, definition #5)

5. a piece of information presented as having objective reality

Are we trying to take apart the English language now.... Hmmm?
In the same way that saying something is not true does not make it not true.....
Fact!
Do we really want to go down that road?

Yes, and so is what you said really a fact?

I mean is it really true that calling something a fact doesn't make it a fact? How can you know if that statement is a fact, if the truth can not be determined by calling something a fact?

2007-11-09 02:14:09 · answer #7 · answered by Anonymous · 1 2

But if I use faith , then my Facts don’t need to pass the test of truth and reason. Faith makes my Facts equal to all the other Facts out there.

Ok, let me answer your question with another...

Do you ever forget the FACT, that saying something is not fact does not make it true?

Perception is reality. If you believe something to be a fact, who am I to tell you different?

That's why we were all taught to not question the bible, sine even the smallest scrutiny shows it to be utter nonsense.
