Other than the normal care for any dog, i.e., lots of love, attention, good quality food, a schnauzer is a hunter, and they do require a lot of attention. You don't mention what size schnauzer, but they are all similar temperaments.

Daily walks, a lot of exercise, are a must.

Also, the dog needs to be groomed regularly, no longer than 10 weeks at a time. You can either go to a professional groomer, or take classes to learn how to groom them yourself. Either way, brushing their coat in between groomings will keep them less matted and easier to clip.

Keep an eye on them in the yard, don't allow them to be outside alone. Terriers in general have a tendency to dig, and if given time and opportunity, they can make your yard an obstacle course of holes.

schnauzers are terriers, hunters, so they must be in a dig proof fenced in yard and never let off lead as their hunting instincts will take them off - sometimes into a road.
Grooming needs to be done by a professional every 6-8 weeks.
Brush at home 3 times weekly if it has a harsh coat, daily if soft coated. Slicker brush toe to elbow, metal wide toothed greyhound comb, trim out all tangles. If bathing make sure you dry with hairdryer on low, brushing out until completely dry.
