I would be vary cautious! I am assuming you don't have dental insurance. If I were you, I would contact a few other dental offices and find out what the "usual and customary" rates are for the procedures you are having done! Also, you can find free or greatly reduced dental care if you look for it on the web. Type in "pro-bono dental services" and you will be amazed at what kind of help is available. I contacted "Donated Dental Services" for my mother(I found them on the web) and they have offices all over North America, in pretty much every state has dental offices affiliated with them. My mother had terrible dental health that was creating weight loss and migraines. They literally GAVE her a new mouth!

Do not commit that dentist or give him a dime until you check this out!!!

Good Luck!

On the one hand the total cost of treatment quoted seems quite high and on top of it the upfront amount being asked is not reasonable. You can have a word with your dentist once again to check if there is any communication gap. If not, then look of a comfortable alternative. You would be better off if you can locate dental treatment abroad or even search for Cheap Smile Makeovers in India where quality work should not cost you more than $15K including stay and airfare. Good luck.

To ask for 1/2 up front to cover lab fees and such is not unheard of.
Dentists are getting burned on payment just like every business so have to be more careful these days.
My advice would be to check around a little on price 50,000.00 for a smile makeover is quite high- that is 1785.71 per each tooth in your mouth if you have 28 teeth.
My office could give you 28 implants with crowns on top for that price, actually cheaper 1750.50 per implant and crown if you pay up front.
Some dentists give you a discount for paying up front- sounds like you deserve at least that!!!!

$50,000 is really steep. A root canal only costs $1600 and an implant costs about the same. The only way it's feasible that it would cost that much is if you had to replace every single tooth in your mouth. I'd ask around. Lot's of dentists do smile makeovers for a lot less.

Lenny - I would shop around some more, though implants are expensive, this price seems a little over the top to me, and asking for more than 20% before the work has even begun sounds very fishy.

You need to find a different dentist. His prices are rediculous. Call 1-800-dentist. They will direct you.

no, it's a dentist that has likely been burned by his clients so many times that he wants payment up front.
