Remington 870 Express Magnum in 12 ga. is about the best all around hunting gun out there. It will shoot anything from the standard 2 3/4" to a 3 1/2" mag load. They come with three chokes and cost about $300 to $350 from a discount sporting goods store. If you have an Academy Sports store they have several types for $175 to $400 and many even have camo finishes. The new 870's come in standard matte finish, which has worked well for me.

Good Luck!

Fish...I have a Mossberg 500(my first shotgun). We cut a dowel to the size of three or four regular sized shot shells and dropped it into the magazine. I had a game warden check it at a public hunt and he had no problem with it.

You can get a lightly used Mossberg 500 for about $180. It's the 8-shot model, not designed for hunting, but you can either get a 5-shot magazine tube and a new barrel, or try and trade with someone who gets a 5-shot for home defense.

Everyone seems to like the 870, but I can't figure out how it's any better than the Mossberg. The design of the 870 lets it FTE frequently, feeding to the ramp is a little less positive, and their elevator design is awful. It has no support for the shell, just flips it in the direction of the chamber, and it stays down so you have to pinch your thumb when you're loading. And yeah, there's the arguement that you don't pinch your fingers when you get better with it, but I've seen guys at tactical gunning courses tear their thumbs up pushing shells in. I suppose for a hunter, you're not likely to have to reload five shots fast, but you're also not going to shoot 2500 shells or more a year for familiarizing yourself with your shotgun.

People do say that the Mossberg is harder to strip, and this is true. But it's hardly true, both are pretty simple, and if you watch the video on stripping the Mossberg, it becomes almost second nature. The only hard part is getting the feed fingers in the right position, but there is no way to get them in the wrong position.

Yeah, so get the Mossberg. There should be no question about it.

I purchased a mossberg 500, a pump gun, with a smoothbore barrel and a cantilever rifled barrel(meaning designed to take a scope and was meant to shoot rifled slugs out of) with an additional cheek piece, 3 chokes(improved, modified, and full) brand new from ***** sporting goods for $275. I have hunted deer with it and have shot 1000's of target loads in it and it has yet to let me down. I can take it fully apart in 23 seconds, and it takes about 35 to put it back together.

It can shoot 2 3/4 inch shells, as well as 3" ones. For some hunting you may need longer 3 1/2 inch shells, like the ones people prefer for turkey hunting, but otherwise this is a great hunting gun.

You can usually find a good used mossberg 500 or remington 870 for around $200. Single shot 12 gauges usually cost less than $100. When i hunt deer with shotgun, I reach for my single shot. It is utterly reliable, patterns the best with buckshot, and shoots slugs the most accurately. If I am shooting birds, i grab my remington 870, because I may need a second shot.

You ought to look at the used guns in your local gun shop. You can often find great deals on used guns there. If you want to buy new, you might consider something like a Mossburg 500 or a Remington 870. Both are priced under $500. The Mossburg is a bit less expensive than the Remington and is a great value for the money.

Go to a sporting goods store where they sell used guns and get yourself an 870. You won't be disappointed. It definitely fits the category of "decent". Very reliable, easy to maintain, tough as nails. Save your money for quality shells that wont expand in the chamber and jam.
Personally, I have been shooting a BPS for 20 years and haven't been let down yet.
