I have been having a discussion with a friend who owns his own dojo, he prefers to use Satin belts when he promotes his black belts. I prefer to use cotton belts during workouts or sparring, and reserve the Satin belts for Tournaments or Ceremony. He is thinking about changing his belts that are given. What type of belts do you prefer? What size width, and what brand do you recommend?

I prefer cotton,standard width,(1 3/4").
Uniforms and belts manufactured in Japan are my favorite.
(they are well made, last a long time, and are affordable)

Mine is cotton. I was at a tournament last week and the coolest black belts I saw were white from the outer lawyer being worn off. I don't wear mine all the time when working out. I only wear it to occasions when rank is considered like a tournament or I am running a class. We have the students name embroidered on the black belt at 1st Deg.

For bedsheets, definitely cotton. I've done the whole silk/satin sheet thing and while it may sound appealing and sexy, it's really just a bad idea. First off, in the summer, the sheets trap the heat, so you're blazing hot. In the winter, it traps in the cold, so you can never get warm. Seasonally, you slip and slide everywhere, so in the morning you're most likely not going to end up in the same place you fell asleep at.

Cotton, satin is great for a sash but for a belt cotton is better.

Leather, preferrably cowhide, but snake, boar or alligator skin would do as well : P
