There's a group of Mexican "peasants" called Zapatista's who want to change Mexico and keep their people there and employed. One of the things they are against is NAFTA and the Maquiladora's NAFTA has brought into their country.
NAFTA has also hurt the American middle class. Virtually wiping out many manufacturing jobs here.
If these "peasants" can see this with their "limited" intelligence as their government says they have, why can't the big wigs in government? Or are they the ones with limited intelligence? Both there and here.

Amanda...I know what you're talking about. This is mainly to make people aware of NAFTA and the damage it's caused here and there. Some people are under the mistaken impression the Mexican People want NAFTA. No they don't. It doesn't benefit them as some assume. The Zapatista's have often spoken out against NAFTA and disappeared or been imprisoned for doing so. This is more a financial aspect question than a humanitarian one.

Dog Tricks,
I have a slightly different take on some of this. I understand and support the plight of the underprivileged, and, the abused of Mexico. However, I lived with and have a great understanding of the political family in Mexico, and, truthfully, they are more powerful than you can imagine. Their hand is in everything, and, I mean everything. All people want to be on the side of the government, but, truthfully, this is a government that is beyond reproach. This is such a corrupt government, and, it has arms every where. The people are scared, and, rightfully so. We only hear about the HUGE murders when people attempt to rise against the establishment, but, there are daily accounts of people "missing" and taken from their homes by the police, never to return. This is a much bigger issue than most would have you know, and, truthfully, without some kind of military assistance, asking them to handle it themselves is nothing short of suicide. There are many "arms" of the law, and, they are dedicated to supporting one another, at all costs.
* Sorry, I must have read it with different eyes. I just re-read it, and, yes, I agree with you, NAFTA must go. It has done nothing to benefit anyone except the wealthy.

The Zapatistas who are fighting for their homeland's reformation are the heroes in all of this. I detest NAFTA and anyone of the middle class should be made well aware of what it is doing to our country. The "Big Wig's" are the only ones who are actually profitting from this stupid thing. I'm sure that they thought that the silent majority would not get wise to their activities, but guess what? We are. And we're no longer silent and will never be again!

I don't think it's a question of intelligence. NAFTA is taking a terrible toll on the American middle class. There are some very rich people who are benefiting from NAFTA and from illegal immigration into the U.S. The rest of us are suffering. The next couple of generations will be divided into the very rich and the very poor. The middle class is being destroyed.

I would have to say that the government is by no means stupid, they know exactly what harm NAFTA is doing. The problem is that they simply don't care. Government will always do what benefits them, not their citizens and even if they create something that doesn't benefit them and is disastrous, their arrogance will not permit them to admit mistakes. It's far beyond time for those that rule to be held accountable.

I'm for the Zapatistas, I have been calling for the need of reform in Mexico for years, it's nice to know that there are some ambitious, hard working, Mexicans that want to make their country a better place to live.

Dog Tricks, those in power see the money they get. And the people making money off the poor are very generous to those who keep them rich.
What makes me sick is that that is starting to describe our own government, as well.
