When you become used to speaking a language, you hardly think about it any longer, but sometimes you hear a new language and immediately you form an impression of it. Maybe it sounds rough to you, or laid-back, or gentle. It's interesting to know what people think of a spoken language. What are your impressions of spoken Korean?

I'm sorry, I can't choose a best answer because what I wanted to know were your true impressions of spoken Korean, and that was what you gave. Thank you for your honest answers! (and Boom Blatz for your keen observation ^^) They were honestly an interesting read . ^^

Spoken language is much easier than writing in korean. I still have problems with ba chim.. though learning to speak korean is so much fun. even if there are words impossible to say... it's not like chinese where four different tones for one word...

Im staying in Korea for 1 year and i think people appreciate when a foreigner tries to speak in Korean. I majorly use english and Korean is a good tool to get freindly with. Once you are good friends... language aint the bar !

Korean sounds great, it's not that hard than Japanese seems to me and definetly sound much cooler than Chinese.
But Boom Blatz is right, listening to young women talk to each other is just too cute. I can't imagine another language that sounds even half as sexy as this one.

When I first started trying to teach myself Korean, I thought it was too fast. But now that I'm familiar with it, although I'm still on beginner level, it doesn't seem fast. It sounds about the same rate as English. It's a very beautifully spoken, unique language.

When I speak English my Korean friends ask me to speak slowly, I never thought I spoke fast.
When they speak Korean I have the same problem they speak so fast I can not understand many of the words.
It sounds more musical to me than English.

They tend to roll a whole sentence into what may sound like one long word therefore people get the impression that they speak really fast. They also like to shorten their sentences to a few key words so if you are not too fluent, then you may have a bit of a problem understanding the gist of it.

One of my favorite things about spoken Korean is listening to young women (~25-35) talking to each other in a group. They are generally loud, boisterous, energetic, and talk to each other with a harshness and a bass to their voice that is a bit surprising.
Then the phone rings.
Suddenly one of the girls answers and her voice rises 3 octaves, gains a sing-song bird chirping quality, and has so much sugar in it that any nearby diabetics would be killed.
This is a phenomenon that I have spoken about to many friends, foreign and Korean, male and female. Korean women, when asked about it, tend to smile and shrug it off.
