Hey Judy ...
Ahhh - isn't this the age old question? I have a pretty strong background in fitness and minored in health and nutrition in college. I can tell you that using the word "diet" is a set up for failure. That is because our society has always looked at dieting as a short term solution to a life long problem. I have always felt the word diet stands for "die" with a "t"! =) Instead of looking it like a diet one of THE biggest steps to long tern success is viewing it as a "life style change" because you must eat healthy for life in order to lose the weight and keep it off. There is - and never will - be a quick fix. The bottom line PERIOD ... is that you must put "out" more than you take "in".
That's not easy obviously or we'd all be thin. If you are the type of person who must have discipline, however, the one program I will recommend is Weight Watchers. It is the most "life style" change type of diet out there because it teaches you how to eat everyday foods and doesn't have some long list of "prohibited" foods. WW has the single greatest success for long tern weight loss of any program out there. I know a lot of people who have been very successful on it. It also helps to hold you responsible due to weekly "weigh ins". This is a huge motivator for many. If you don't want to follow a program like this you must work to eliminate all highly processed foods, excessive sugar, high fructose corn syrup (which is in almost ALL packaged foods now), white carbs (such as white rice and bread), and partially hydrogenated fats (which is also in many packaged foods). Your daily diet should consist mainly of whole grain breads and pasta, fruits and veggies, low fat dairy, and lots of low fat protein such as fish, chicken, turkey, etc ... Although high in fat nuts in small amounts are also a huge benefit to eathly eating. They are good for your eyes, heart, brain, and joints (esp. raw almonds).
One of the greatest things you can also do to have beautiful skin and help you to lose weight is to drink at least 64 oz. of water a day. It flushes out your liver and hydrates you whole body. Another culprit of weight gain - believe it or not - is dehydration. Water has got to be one of your best friends! =)
Lastly, you MUST exercise at least 5 days a week. You do NOT have to kill yourself to get an awesome workout. You must just commit to a good 30+minute walk and you will lose weight if you've changed your diet. The more you exercise the more you'll lose, of course, but the good news is moderate exercise is better for you than hard core exercise because it can do damage to your body. Your exercise time must be sacred - it a THE largest key to weight loss success. I also strongly recommend 20 - 30 minutes of weight training at least 2 days a week. Muscle "eats" fat so the more lean muscle you have the less fat you will have - automatically. Weight training is one of THE best things a woman can do to lose weight ... help her posture ... and stay young and strong. Contrary to still popular belief you will NOT bulk up from weight training. That's impossible for a woman without steroids. You use light weights and do high repetitions and you will see a difference very quickly.
I know this is a lot ... lol ... but I have seen it all. Do not beat yourself up ... losing weight takes time and as you do it you are bound to feel better. Take one day at a time and be your own best friend. We only have one life to live and you are the only one who can take care of you. Make it a priority and I wish You THE best of luck!!
Peace to you ...

Think lifestyle change...not Die-T! I personally lost 100 lbs in 8 months by eating no more then 1500 calories a day & 45- 1 hr. of cardio 3 days a week. Limit your sugary & fried foods. Everything in moderation. I rewarded myself for a good week...I got one FREE meal a wk...only if I stayed within 1500 calories a day the other days. Think--eat to be FED not to be FULL. And you must eat to lose. :)) Sending skinny vibes your way.

diets don't work, period.
eat healthy natural foods, whole wheats, non-processed foods, lots of fruits and veggies, high proteins. avoid soda, fast foods, and anything containing high fructose corn syrup. focus on being healthy and only allowing healthy foods into your body, and the weight will come off as long as you eat enough and try not to put your body into starvation mode. exercise daily.
