Hi, Linux 1.0 I am not sure but I think its development started in the year 1991. Most current distributions of Linux r using 2.6.22 such as Ubuntu or OpenSuse. The latest stable kernel to be released though is kernel 2.6.23 and pretty soon we might see an upgrade to that kernel. I hope I helped.
Good Luck and take care!

If you mean the Linux kernel, then it was first released to the public on 17 September 1991, for the Intel x86 PC architecture (was a 0.x version). The kernel was augmented with system utilities and libraries from the GNU project to create a usable operating system, which later led to an alternate term, GNU/Linux.

According to http://www.kernel.org , the 1.0 version was released on March 1994.

All the distros use the same kernel and the same GNU utilities, but of course have different versioning number (i.e. Fedora 8, SuSE 10.3, Ubuntu 7.10, etc.), so to see how updated is a particular distro you have to check the version of the programs it includes (i.e. kernel version, desktop environment version, web browser, etc.).

At the moment the current release of the Linux kernel is 2.6.23.1 released on October 2007.

The latest version of the most famous distribution:
Ubuntu ==> 7.10
OpenSuSE ==> 10.3
Fedora ==> 8
Mandriva ==> 2008
Debian ==> 4.0
Slackware ==> 12
.
