Well, I have oiwned them over 30 yr and been raising them over 9. They are loveable, loving, smart, cute, cuddly, fiesty, loyal, protective. Really fun little dogs. The ultimate lap dog. They are wonderful companions. You need to get one from a reputable breeder. They are house dogs and should never be raised outside. Make sure the pups were not raised in a kennel. It affects their personalities. Can be good with kids if raised with them. Prefer their own breed as companions but can be good with other dogs. They are just wonderful little dogs!!!! Any more questions, you can reach me thru my profile page.

They are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, probably due to Paris Hilton, so puppy mills are churning them out like crazy. This means many dogs out there are going to be sporting the negative aspects of the breed...nervous, yappy, clingy. A well-bred chihuahua will be none of the above.
They come in both smooth and long-haired varieties; smoothies may need a sweater in winter.
Life expectance is 15-17 years.
They are the oldest breed in North America - they originated in Mexico, in the state of Chihuahua, where they hunted in packs. They could actually bring down a deer by biting through its hamstrings. Not that your pet is going to try, but still interesting and shows what they were once capable of.
They are small, yes, but not particularly fragile unless you drop them from shoulder height or really stomp on them. You DO need to be careful where you place your feet however.
One mistake I think people frequently make with chis is to treat them like a human baby, carry them everywhere, fuss over them until the dog is in charge (and therefore intolerable to most other people)
The best-behaved chihuahuas I know, are ones who have been treated like dogs, walked on a leash, taken to obedience classes and daycare. Be sure and get yours from a reputable breeder (not a pet store - those pups come from mills and are taken away from the mom WAY too young, therefore they are usually not properly socialized) or at least from someplace where you can meet BOTH parents of the pup.

there are a lot of poor quality Chihuahuas out there..
NEVER buy from a pet store - these are definately LOW QUALITY pups (regardless of breed).. and are certainly over priced.

SOME back yard breeders offer mid range quality...at BETTER price than a pet store.

IF you want a good quality you must get from a reputable breeder. This would be a breeder who goes to shows to prove the parents are worth breeding - this will be more $ but come with better guarantees...

Many have breeding problems - produce small litters and often require ceasarian sections.
Many are nasty because their owners didnt socialize them correctly (people tend to baby little dogs) they should really go to doggie oedience school for training and socialization like all dogs.

NEVER buy anything called a "Teacup" Chihuahua.. these are simply runts or dogs stunted from poor genetics or poor nutrition and wont live long life.

I have two Chihuahua's, and one I have had since he was a baby! When they are puppies, you have to keep their temperature and blood sugar at the right levels, or they can go into shock and die! We kept a heating pad on low for him and we gave him a little sugar water to keep his blood sugar at the right level!! They are very smart dogs, and despite what I have heard, mine are not noisy at all! I have two boxers who bark and are more noisy that my chi's!! I hope this helps some!!

I know not to ever own one in an apartment. They are VERY noisy and disturb all the neighbors. I have TWO neighbors who have them. It's not fun.
