It is a common misconception from lack of further study that Cain must have married his sister because after all, weren't Adam and Eve the only two people on the earth at that time? No they weren't. They were the first...but not the only creations of humans. Adam mean's man..and was representative of all men created at that time as Sons of God created in His Image. However, Eve means..."of man" and was created as his mate/companion and is representative of the females, or daughters of men...not born of men and a mother but designed from the rib bone. The Nephilem where on the earth and these were men of great strength and considered giants and able to live for thousands of years. If you read the apocryphal books which were included in the original KJV of 1611 then it gives one a better understanding of that time. However, the Bible isn't without answers as it is given right now...see below.

Genesis 4:14-16
14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Cain couldn't have married his own sister because he was driven away into another land and in fact feared that being a stranger he might be killed himself so God placed a mark upon him so that peeps would leave him alone. Somewhere in the land of Nod...not sure where that is...thinking that Eden was in Mesopotamia somewhere...maybe, who knows..then Nod was somewhere there abouts. The Genesis record talks about the daughters of men...plural...being ravished by these Nephilem type individuals...so there you have...beyond that that the world grew more and more corrupt and at that time began the pagan religions that led to the flood. Only the individual man was ever recorded as walking with God...Noah, Enoch, Job and all the way to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and so forth. There is so much to learn just from Genesis. Love in Christ, ~J~

First, taking the bible literally is simpleminded ignorance.
Second, it doesn't actually state that God stopped creating people after he created Adam and Eve. Resting on the seventh day doesn't mean he didn't create a slew of other stuff on the 8th.
Third, if you look at what comes next... a whole series of begats and then put the story into the context of the jewish religion where jews are the chosen people. The creation story is basically just a way for jews to understand their place in the world. They are directly descended from the 'first' man. They are special, the chosen people. Lineage is very important in tribal societies, much more so than in a modern western context. Ultimately, in terms of the story, who she is, is not mentioned because its not important who Cain married. He is no longer part of the chosen tribe.

A sister, unless he waited until a daughther of one of his sisters (married to Abel or other of his many unnamed brothers) was old enough to marry.

Genesis chapter four starts with Adam & Eve having their first two sons Cain (Cane) and Abel, and then continues with the story of the two brothers. The focus of the chapter is Cane & Abel, not Adam & Eve. That does not mean that Adam & Eve stopped having kids until Cain (Cane) killed Abel 20? or 30? years later. Genesis chapter 5 returns to Adam's story and genealogy and says that Adam had many sons and daughthers.

Some people say that he must have married his own sister, however others believe that even though The Bible doesn't mention it that God created other Gardens with other people not related to Adam and Eve. God placed a mark on Gain so that other people wouldn't kill Cain when God cast him out of the Garden Of Eden. If there were only Adam,Eve, and their two sons ,at that time, living in the Garden common sense would tell your that if Cain received a mark of protection so that other people would not kill him God must have created other people! Cain's wife lived in the land of Nod. Her name is not mentioned, they had a son named Enoch.

We know that it was a woman. They had children together. We do not know if this was his sister or some other beings that God might have created. We don't tell others everything that we have done and neither does God. If God chose to make more than just Adam an Eve, there wouldn't be anything wrong with that.
One day I will find out all of this stuff. It makes me sad to think there will be some who will never get to know.

Cain must have married his sister or possibly a neice. Incest was not an issue then. It is stated that Adam had other sons and daughters (other than those specifically named - Cain, Abel and Seth) so it means that Cain must have married a close relative.

It doesn't give a name. The bible does mention "people of another land" so I assume she was one of these.(Genesis 4:16-17) 16So Cain went out from the LORD’S presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch.

Incest was OK in the Bible for many centuries even after the flood! Abraham married his OWN SISTER!
