This quote is self explanatiory.. A person believe in his observation more than holy scripture. He probably is going to hell.

Magellan was wise to use his logical reasoning in making a decision.
You know ... Magellan obviously didn't support religion but I wonder how he felt about the Bible, because there is one interesting point.

Long before people thought the earth was flat, a bible writer recorded this (around 730 BC) ...
"There is One who is dwelling above the CIRCLE of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, the One who is stretching out the heavens just as a fine gauze, who spreads them out like a tent in which to dwell," (Isaiah 40:22)

Moreover, nearly 3000 years BEFORE mankind thought that the earth was supported by 4 elephants standing on a sea-turtle, notice what one bible writer wrote:
"He is stretching out the north over the empty place, Hanging the earth upon nothing." (Job 26:7)

Interesting, don't you think?

EDIT
Hey, Shattered Faith ...
This is the scripture you were referring to:
"Again the Devil took him along to an unusually high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him: “All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to me.” (Matthew 4:8-9).
Notice that Satan took Jesus to an UNUSUALLY HIGH MOUNTAIN ... So, yes you were right about the altitute. Additionally, we can confidently say that in Jesus' time there wouldn't have been any sky-scrappers or the like to block views. The world in which Jesus lived was a lot smaller than our world today.

Moreover, the kingdoms that Jesus was shown represented the materialistic glitter and political power which was under Satan's control. Satan couldn't have given Jesus anything that wasn't his in the first place. Just like we can't offer somebody something that isn't ours to start with.

the shadow for magellan is science .first comes the laws of science then faith .if faith coincides with the laws of science than its possible magellan wouldnt have a problem with the church.obviously for magellan the church was not the authority to decide whether or not the world is flat or round .

It sounds like Magellan knew a great deal more than the people who wrote the Bible (and the people who now say that every single word is true).

For those Christians who have read the Bible with sufficient care (about 99% of the ones who post on here) you might want to check Isaiah 11:12; I Samuel 2:8; and Psalms 24:1-2 for examples of the profound lack of understanding and knowledge of the writers of the Bible.

They also said that the sun revolved round the earth and even prosecuted Copernicus as a heretic for saying otherwise.

Basically the church should stick to religious matters and not pronounce about such things, otherwise they get egg on their face. Whether the earth is flat or not is not a religious question but a scientific one

Hat off for Magellan.

Although it wouldn't be a shadow as much as Earthshine, which you can see with the naked eye and from which you can suggest that the earth isn't flat. Or he might have seen the Earth's shadow through a telescope...

Can somebody quote where the Bible says the earth is round?
IMO that may have made it a bit hard for Satan to take Jesus to a place high enough to see the whole of the earth at once.

He was right and already knew more- he had maps that took him directly to the straits of Magellan if you look at his travel route.
