i want to go from lighter to darker shade

only stain if it has not been varnished
if it has been varnished it will have a shine to it and all the varnis will have to be removed or you can buy a darker varnish.
key the surface with sand paper first and apply with a foam roller for best finish.

Yes. First you should sand it. Then use a good stain meant for wooden floors.
