a tour group like cosmos would be a good way to visit korea if you wanted something structured. getting a visa is not difficult, (as an american citizen) you can get one upon landing in incheon, the seoul airport. the links that angel referred to are good help and can get you on your way. contrary to what has been stated in a previous answer the flight will not take you 23 hours from anywhere in the world.
you don't need a tour group, though. korea is an excellent country for an english speaker to travel to because english is a popular language. i have spent about three years of my life there and have never had a problem communicating, even though i understood no korean when i initially arrived. the country is easy to get around and there is help on every corner, as the people are as helpful as they can be.
take a lonely planet guidebook, your hiking boots and a good attitude and you will have a great time.
