Sloppy Joes are delicious...if they're done right! Brown one pound of Hamburger meat (minced beef if you're in England) and onions together. Add chopped celery and green peppers and saute.
Once the meat and vegetables are cooked, add two cans of pork and beans (baked beans for the British).
Add four tablespoons of BBQ Sauce. Simmer for twenty minutes. Serve on toasted hamburger buns.
Easy, but good!

Sloppy Joes are so much fun! They are a bit messy but one of my families favorite things. My daughter used to make me bring Sloppy Joes in for her birthday instead of cupcakes, cause she just thinks they are fun and delicious. They came into existence long ago, as a way to stretch your ground beef and save money on the grocery budget. My mom said her family ate them during the depression and she used to make them for us too.
Some of the recipes here sound great! No one should go through life without trying one... I think the secret to the fun is in eating them with friends, so you can tease each other about how messy/silly you look with red stuff on your face. We always pile ours really full,so it's bound to fall out of the bun a little at least. An easy and delicious way to try it is to use a dry powder mix from the grocery store... it just takes a small can of tomato paste, browned ground beef and some hamburger buns.
We also have a slightly different variety we like at our house too... it is not your classic sloppy joe but a variation and it's good too.
Sloppy Beaus
1 pound beef
1 medium onion diced
3 tbsp catsup
3 tbsp mustard
1 can chicken gumbo soup
brown beef and onion in a lil hot fat … stir in catsup and mustard and soup
simmer until thickened about 15 minutes
spoon like sloppy joes over a toasted split bun

ground meat fried and crumbled. Add tomato paste, sauce, or ketchup and some spices and a little sugar if you want. Slap it on a bun or bread. They are called sloppy joes because they are sloppy, you will need a fork or lots and lots of napkins. (Manwich is similar in taste.)

The origial term 'sloppy joe' was a T-shirt usually multi-coloured hoops of huge proportions.
But now I believe it is a fast food item.

here is is a great recipe
1# lean ground beef, brown beef in frying pan over med. heat
1/4cup chopped onion, after meat is done add onion till soft
1/4cup chopped green pepper add with onion cook till soft
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 tsp brown sugar and salt and pepper to taste, add these last 6 ingredents and continue to cook and stir low temp about 30 minutes.
when the cooking is finished, its almost time to eat, i toast the inside of a hambuger bun, apply mayo to the top and bottom of the inside of the bun , laddle the meat to the bottom bun, sprinkle shredded chedder cheese on the meat , then some coleslaw on the top the cheese, top with the other bun. now you know why they call it a sloopy joe, but yummyyyy, for extra measure with tatar tots! enjoy

It's a hamburger and red-sauce mix. I take ground beef, add a lot of ketchup, some yellow mustard, and some Worcester sauce.
Serve on toast or buns. Yum!
