Average, for California. Of course this will be higher if it's more than your typical stop and arrest for DUI, if there is an accident, etc., it will be more.

Minimum fine: $ 390
Penalty Assessment: $ 666
State Restitution Fund: $ 100
Alcohol-Abuse Education Fund: $ 50
Blood or Breath-Testing Fee: $ 37
Jail Cite-and-Release Fee: $ 10
Driving/Alcohol-Awareness School: $ 375
(16 weeks minimum)
License Reissue Fee: $ 100
Attorney Fees (average): $ 2,500
Auto Insurance Increase: $ 3,600 - $6,600
(The Auto Club estimates $2,200 a year for 3 years)
Total $ 7,828 - $ 10,828

Depends on where you live, but to give you an example:

I got a DUI in 1998. I spent one night in jail. Three weekends of community service, $1,500 fine, 15 Saturdays in a row of school at $40 for each day ($600), insurance doubled for 3 years, and suspended license for 6 months.

All that for a .09 BAC.

So as you can see, it doesn't pay to play. I learned my lesson big time.

Edit:
A bit of trivia for you. The woman who founded MADD, who's son was killed by a drunk driver got a DUI several years after her sons death.

It varies depending upon the jurisdiction but you can figure $600 - $1,000 in fines and costs and at least that much for an attorney. Then figure upwards of $1,000 per year for 5 years in increased insurance costs plus $2,000 - $5,000 or more in taxi fares. A first conviction can easily add up to $10,000 or more when all costs are taken into consideration. (With my commute, losing my license for a year would cost me upwards of $40k in cab fares!)

It depends on several things. If you are stupid enough to drink and drive and kill someone, then it cost too much. If you kill several people because you were drinking and driving, then I think the dui driver should be put to death.

If you simply crash your car into a tree or telephone pole, then it will cost you not only the money to fix it, but your insurance will go up. Hopefully, you will learn to not drink and drive, where you could actually kill someone, end up in jail for a long time.

In other words, if someone is REALLY stupid enough to drink and drive, they should be hung from the tallest tree in the town square.

The fines to the government and traffic school won't be much. Maybe a couple thousand. The hardest hit will be the rise in your insurance.

First???? Is there some sort of master plan here???

If you want to get off with no time served and a six month adjournment with your record wiped clean after that, expect to pay a decent lawyer about 1500 dollars to get you off.
