I mean, it don't look good, and now it is emerging more and more that being grossly overweight is really bad for a lady's health ( cancer rates etc ). Another thing, why is it always ok to make nasty comments about really thin women, but not grossly overweight ones ?

It is not just obese women but men also and not just UK but other countries as well. It is never okay to make nasty comments about anything or anyone but that is life and there are always the people who will look for a cheap laugh.

Good food in the UK is expensive but many would have you believe that is no excuse. There is a great deal of pressure on people today to have a family and go to work not leaving the mother much time for herself to go to a gym or to do regular exercise. Oh I can hear the brigade saying walk to work don't drive - well that is not possible for everyone. Fatness is not necessarily about laziness. It is possible to have a sedentary job which brings in a wage to keep hearth and home together but does not allow that person to burn the calories - so eat less I hear it shouted - but if you are tired from the constant round of "living" it is understandable that people will look to make short cuts of ready prepared meals which have high salt/sugar/fat content rather than stand in a small kitchen preparing food for a family. I am not making excuses for obesity as it is certainly, as a nation, bad for us but I don't think it is fair that fatter people are constantly being beaten up by programmes like "you are what you eat" etc. Good question from you - hope it generates lots of discussion.

There are obese women AND men and also children. The obese women and men feed their children poor quiality cheap food and lots of fast food so it will become a vicious circle. Quite simply people are really lazy these days and dont think they need to do any exercise. It is so easy to spend all evening on the couch in front of the TV eating conveneint and fattenning food. Just one chocolate chip cookie a day will make you gain slowly over time but some people eat a whole packet and think nothing of it.

When I was on a rare occasion waiting for a takeaway the other day a huge man came in, placed his huge order and then had a ice cream with a flake while he was waiting.

I can't see the situation improving in the near future unless fast food and junk food is banned!

I have heard many more cruel comments about overweight women than thin ones, and i agree that it's on the increase. But the same can be said for men, that's something that doesn't get reported so much, i wonder why?

Excuse me, why are you just singling out the women? I'm sick of the constant criticism of women's appearance, weight, size, etc. Many men are also obese and equally at risk from health problems. Whenever I hear comments like this, I just see it as a dig at women in general rather than a genuine concern, otherwise you would have not singled out just the female gender.

In the UK we have a very unhealthy diet, where much of the food is processed and high in animal fats. We have a generally poor regime of exercise and tend to cook the goodness out of the food. Chocky bars are major culprits, as are cakes and sticky buns. The result is too much fat, high cholesterol and ultimate arterial failure. There are plenty of obese men as well !!!

As in America, the British diet isn't very good. America and Britain have two of the highest cholesterol rates as well as obesity rates.

For the same reason as there so many obese men in Britain. It doesn't look good on you either! And it's bad for your health too.

I have heard overweight women (and men... why are you just talking about overweight women??) get made fun of, more so than underweight people. Although I guess in magazines, like Heat, people are contantly making fun of skinny people... that really bugs me!

It is quite simple, they eat too much and don't exercise enough.
I was in the supermarket watching a woman and her teenage daughter putting the contents of their trolley onto the belt for the cashier to scan. Both were very over-weight, huge in fact. Not one item they had bought came without a cardboard box, not a fresh vegetable of piece of fruit would cross their lips. Everything they eat was pre-made, pizzas, kebabs, burghers, microwave chips etc. Everyone of these items is full of salt, fat and sugar, combine it with a sedentary lifestyle and porkers you will get.
