The Bible says Jesus was crucified. But if you're curious for alternative views on the "symbols" in the Bible and other religious texts you could watch http://zeitgeistmovie.com/ I'm not advertising it or anything, just saw it a few days ago, and thought it was interesting, does not stop me from believing in Jesus or going to Church, spirituality is a question of faith not facts... well at least for me.

the bible clearly and undeniably teaches that Jesus died on a cross [matthew 27:32,40,42; mark 15:21,30,32; luke 23:26; john 19:17,19,25; acts 2:23; 1 corinthians 1:17-18; colossians 1:20; 2:14-15]. the greek words in those scriptures specifically identify a cross, not a pole or stake.

Matthew 27:31. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.32. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. ... 38. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40. And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Cross, pole or staked out on an ant hill.
It really does not matter. The point is that the Romans were incompetent.

If I want somebody dead then I expect them to stay dead for more than a Saturday!
I sure hope the Sanhedrin got their money back from Pilate on that deal.
