it is my opinion that they are religious out of fear. mainly the fear that they will cease to exist. they feel through religion they can have ever lasting life, which is their main concern. hell in my opinion is to make them feel safe not scared. they are far too in love with themselves to believe that they could be the ones worthy of hell. so they create hell as a way to protect their "afterlife" from whatever they fear. (but of course this is just my opinion from observing those who claim to be religious.)

In Christianity we must follow Jesus not because of fear of the afterlife but out of love. In bible it mentions a lot that you must fear god. In Greek fear is fovou meaning respect. So really you must respect god not fear him.

I don't, I follow Jesus out of a desire to know God and to become a better person. The afterlife is an unexpected bonus.

I follow Jesus because He died for me. He loves me so much that He was willing to take all of the punishment I deserve on Himself so I can be with Him forever. When you really, honestly, truly realize what that means, you can't help but fall head over heels in love with Him. I wouldn't need some outstanding afterlife to get me to follow. I'd be happy to be able to touch the tip of his sandal and say "Thank you so much."

You fear mere puny man, who can only kill your body. Best fear God who can throw your soul into hell forever.
