i had my top and bottom wisdom teeth cut out and they had to cut into my jaw, the dr. said they almost broke my jaw. it has been like a month and now there is a really hard knot on the jaw that hurts real bad. also, when i wake up it takes a while before i can open my mouth at all, and when i finally get it open, it pops really loud. does anyone know what this is?

Between the jaw (mandible) and the skull is a small fibrous disc that acts as a cushion...a little like the discs in your spine. When you have your wisdom teeth extracted, especially under GA, this jaw joint (TMJ) is often stretched beyond its normal range and the swelling within the joint that occurs as a result can affect function.

Normally, this is a temporary state of affairs but try some anti-inflammatories, gentle mobilisation and massage of the area and also a warm compress to ease the stiffness felt in the region.

If very recent (less than 3 months) X-rays will not show anything as the damage is to soft tissue, not bone. If the problem persists for more than 3 months you should certainly consider seeing a TMD Specialist for management.

it sounds like you might have a small dislocation to your jaw or maybe it was done wrong call you reg doc and you dentist and let them know how you are feeling most likely one of them will want you to come in for xrays to see what is going on. If you don't feel comfortable calling your dentist call 1800 dentist and they can help you find someone else and maybe someone there can give you some advice on what to do. this does not sound normal to me I had mine removed later in life and never went through anything like that. I hope you feel better soon. Good luck

If you can't contact the dentist that preformed the surgery, you need to contact another dentist, or perhaps a dental surgeon and explain to them the problem you are having.
