what you need is a doggy sandbox.
*seriously!*
build a sand box in one spot in your yard. to get him to dig THERE and not your yard, let him out and the second you catch him digging where you don't want to take him to the sand box and show him a treat that you place on top of the sand. then let him eat it.
do this...a couple of times..(make it a small treat we don't wanna make him sick).
next after a while of putting the treat on top of the sand to get the idea across that something YUMMY is in the box...you will push the treat into the sand IN FRONT OF HIM. let him sniff it and watch you push it into the sand.
again do this several times.
eventually he wont want to dig anywhere but the sand box cause that's where the goodies are.
all you have to do is bury little treats at different depths in the sand box. not only does this keep him from digging up your yard, but it stimulates his mind, which is JUST as important as exercise.
you can also bury rawhides, or chew toys too.

I'm am no expert , but If you own your own home, I have heard
A few people now, tell me that they basically dig the holes deeper. Then they actually will lay down cement . After it dries they put the dirt back over it, and start grass.
I don't know if you could do this or not. I just have heard of people doing it.
Something that I have tried before with my dog when she gets into trouble, I have taken a coffee can and tossed a handful of change (or rocks) in the tin can.
I shake it as hard and loud as I can every time I catch her. It scares her and she has now stopped doing this. That tip I read in a book.
Kinda odd resolutions, but hopefully one of them may work for ya. Good Luck

do no longer bypass away him unsupervised. And if he does it in front of you place a leash on him and supply a stern correction and tell him in a stern voice "No Digging". If he's around the backyard doing get a soda can fill it with approximately 15 pennies and throw it so it lands next to him. this could startle him and he will maximum probable give up and run faraway from the hollow he's digging. in the adventure that your continual in doing this he will ultimately give up. the reason he's digging is with the aid of the fact he's bored and desires extra workout to stimulate him and he will much less probable be digging holes.

Sorry to say some dogs are just "diggers"!!!
Found that out,... bet your pup got some Lab or hound (like beagle) in him....?
My rescued Lab, from time I got him at 8 mths. old till now at 10 still digs!
Like graves all over yard,.. got no grass in most areas!
I too, tried everything,... peppers, powders, even left a hose running/dripping water in areas thruout day and night.
I resigned myself to just having a proned digger,... all I could do is put chicken wire down in muddy dirt areas,.. he won't dig on wire and let some of the grass grow back,.. then keep moving the wire over to the new dug holes after a week or so.
Hope this suggestion is some help. But I gave up on my old guy!

Does he have any toys out there? Is there anything better to do in the yard than dig? I'd get him a ball, teach him to play with it. Some other toys. Praise him for playing with the good toys! A treat ball is fun too, where you hide treats in it, and as he plays with it, the treats fall out. I bet he'd like that. He just sounds bored. Try some toys.

You need to exercise him more. They do these things when they have pent up energy. If you walk him at least once a day for 45 minutes to an hour this should help. Good Luck ;)

Some people suggest putting the dogs droppings into the holes that he's dug and cover them up... I've never tried it myself, but I have some people that say it really works to keep dogs from re-digging their holes.

Build him a sandbox - just a like kid's sandbox, only make it a bit deeper. Hide toys and treats in it each day.
This is what we did at the humane society I work at - helps the diggers.
The only other option is a dog run with a concrete floor.
