Although I am not a huge fan of her style, I recognize her as a pioneer of a specific form. When viewing early photographs you but bear in mind the time frame they were shot in...ie what was the norm, what equipment was available, what did the artist have to do to get to those images, etc.

I think Ace put it very well.

I saw the show of Arbus' work that her daughter put together last year (I think it was last year). I don't care for her work in the sense that I wouldn't want to emulate it. I don't see the world the same way and don't speak the same visual dialect. But, I rate her very highly.

I think people too often confuse whether they like something with its merit. They aren't the same thing; liking is often the simple response to the familiar.

Is she overrated? She has influenced an art form. What do you think?
