i have an intrest in taking pictures, i don't want a low pixel camera like some slim digital ones. I am also intrested in manual controls, what camera is a good idea to buy? I don't want one that is too expensive!

A "good" camera is one with the features and benefits important to you. One suitable to me might be too much - or too little - for you.

A DSLR like the Nikon D40 or Pentax K100D or Canon XTi might suit you perfectly - or perhaps be too much camera for you.

IMO you should spend some quality time at a professional camera store (one that only sells cameras, not 10,001 other things and cameras) and let a trained camera salesperson guide you. He/she will be able to explain the features and benefits of every camera in the store. You'll be encouraged to handle the cameras and take a few photos with them. Many professional camera stores offer an hour or two of instruction with your purchase. Try getting that from an on-line seller or BestBuy or Target or Circuit City or any of the discount chains.

If you do spend time in a pro camera store, BUY your camera from the salesperson whose time you've used. Most likely he/she is on commission so its just not right for you to "stiff" them by not buying from them.

I wanted the exact same thing. I bought the Canon PowerShot SD750, which came with 7.1 megapixels and a large 3" LCD screen. Best Buy, $249.99.
