My uncle and I found a stray bird today outside of our apartment. We live in Hawaii, and so there are a lot of dirty birds and such. (The one we found is a Spotted Nape Dove) However, this bird looks sort of puffy, almost like it's swollen, but it's not pregnant, and I'm sure it's not just swollen for no reason.

What's wrong with it?

If it looks puffy, it probably has its feathers fluffed up, and this is probably because it doesn't feel well. Keep it away from any pet birds in case it has something contagious. Beyond that, I don't know what to do for it except feed and water it, and maybe take it to a vet.

Without seeing the bird and performing an examination, I would not be able to tell you what is wrong with it.

You should contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released back in to the wild.

In the US, all native migratory birds are protected by federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act) and it is illegal to have a protected bird in your possession unless you have the proper permits, so you can not attempt to doctor this bird yourself. Also, do not take a wild animal to a vet - vets are for pets and most do not have the expertise to care for wild animals; nor do most vets have the proper licenses that would allow them to keep a protected bird.
