That would depend on the context. Sarcasm could be at play, but "Way to go" is an abbreviation for "That's the way to go."

Similarly, "Awesome" means "inspiring awe," or in the expression, "impressive."

They are both compliments normally, or an expression of excitement or caring about something. In the aforementioned case of sarcasm, however, they are either lethargic responses, or insults.

So in that case:

Person One: I just won 20,000 dollars on a game show!
Person Two: Way to go!

Person One: My car gets 45 miles per gallon.
Person Two: Awesome!

Person One: I slipped and hit my head on the floor.
Person Two: Way to go, idiot.

When Americans say "way to go" or "awesome" what we mean is 'good job" , "well done" , "thats great" ..any of those
Now the new phrase going around (which I think is stupid)
is "sweet" This has replaced the phrase we used for
the last 20 years and you used to hear on the tv show Happy Days...which was "Cool"

"way to go" means you are on the right track - thats that right thing to do, continue that way. Awesome is a general expression of aclamation a more emotive term for 'that's extremely impressive'

It's the American equivalent of the English phrases "Jolly good show, old boy" or "Absolutely spiffing, don't you know!" They are congratulatory expressions.
