Well, it would depend on WHERE in California you wish to travel... as others have mentioned, Amtrak does the "long" run from SoCal to Northern California (for now).
There are also the:
ACE (Stockton-San Jose): http://www.acerail.com/
CALTRAIN (San Jose - SF): http://www.caltrain.com/
COASTER: (San Diego-LA): http://www.gonctd.com/
GOOD Luck !!

Amtrak has the California Zephyr and the Coast Starliner.
Metrolink has Southern California routes.
Metro has light rail routes in the greater Los Angeles area.
BART has light rail routes in the Bay Area (San Francisco).
The California Zephyr connects with the rest of Amtrak's routes via Chicago.

Did you try Amtrak? I know it goes up and down the coast and
connects from Bakersfield to Barstow via Amtraks bus line, the Orange Belt for east and west. Also LA to Chicago etc on old ATSF route. Shorter distances in CA by Metro systems such as Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Metrolink in LA area. (goes right down to the beach and you can take your surfboard or bike on with you). The Travel Agents should have skedules and able to book.
