By us, I assume you mean America. Most of their equipment is Cold War-era, built by the Soviets.
The People's Liberation Army Air Force has roughly 2300 combat aircraft, but they are largely outdated, and even antiquated compared to the USA's. So, they're not great, but they sure have numbers, although roughly only half of what the US Air Force has, which is about 4,200 combat aircraft, which are far more advanced.
So in short, China has a decent Air Force for its region, but in comparison to the USAF, they're a flying joke. Though to be fair, they are undergoing a 'Modernization Program', but that won't come to fruition for a while, if ever.

China builds their own jets.
designs are Russian, mostly Soviet era.
however, it seems that 48 or so are the next to newest Russian design.

To compensate for their mostly second rate quality, Chinese air power doctrine emphasizes overwhelming numbers. They can easily put 700 fighters into the air at once, perhaps 1000, in one provincial size area.
That creates problems -- the typical US or Taiwanese fighter only mounts eight missiles maximum and hit rates are thought to be on the order of 60%. Thus, one fires two missiles at each target and expects one target in six to survive. 100 Taiwanese fighters might then try to engage as many as 400 Chinese ones, but 65 or so Chinese ones would survive and the Taiwanese ones would be out of missiles.
Even an Aegis missile cruiser [US Navy] only has some 130 missiles or so.
If the Chinese mass on small area targets [Taiwan, for example] it seems possible that they could seize control of the air at some huge cost in losses [335 fighters destroyed is a LOT].
Another small area target is a US Navy carrier task force. It only has 36 to 48 fighters, plus its Aegis ships and a few lesser quality launchers on other ships.

the chinese fly various russian designed Migs the flanker in particular, though manufacture them through a lease on the design, (they are allowed to build with russia's consent, just like the kalashnikov series rifles)
the jets of the most recent designs rate fairly well but are built for speed and id have to say that the f-16 fighting falcon, f/a-18 super hornet, f-22 raptor, f-35 lightning II, and the even the aging f-15 eagle could go toe to toe with the migs but in the end would best them
chinas air force is more quantity than quality, so as far as sheer numbers go they win but in war numbers dont matter if superior firepower through quality and design are its contender and in which case the US is quality and design
watch the military channel sometime its fascinating

SP is totally wrong. China has the biggest air force on earth (in number of aircraft) many of them are cold war era Soviet knock-offs. But they also have bought many of Russia's newest Su-30MKKs China also builds a knock-off version of the tried and true MiG-29 Fulcrum. These are both very lethal air to air fighters. The Su-30 especially will out fight everything we have except the F-22. What's worse, there is strength in numbers, and our Air Force would have to try to figure out which of their aircraft are easy kills and which are the newer more dangerous ones. If an F-22 expends all of its missiles on old MiG-21s only to be left defenseless against a Su-30MKK, then we'd lose.

They are Chinese built MiGs most of them.
They are decent, many would like to say that they are worthless, but since China can build so many of them I wouldn't want to say that so quickly.
