A real ong time depends how often and how long are your sparring sessions, but even if you loose some elasticity they are still usable, you can wash them in gentle cycle and let them air dry between sessions.

The vinyl gear is what I think you are referring to and it holds up pretty well to heavy bag works outs. Foam dipped gear rips and tears from the stress and a good set of vinyl gear will lose its elasticity before it wears out. You don't wash it all the time just occasionally, on gently cycle, cold water, and then let it air dry. You can also place it in its own closed bag with a sheet of fabric softener in your work out bag and occasionally store it in a closed bag with some baking soda and leave it sit to remove the nasty odor that it acquires from all the sweating when wearing it and using it. Also leaving it out to air dry after using it helps this as well rather than putting it away wet in some enclosed workout bag. I would always leave my workout bag open after sparring just so it could more easily dry and air out after fighting in a tournament. Tiger Claw makes some excellent vinyl gear that I used to put in my studio for students to use for heavy bag workouts or for use in sparring until they would buy their own.

most often the type of sparring gear you use depends on where you train and where you compete, sadly we all have 2 full sets, cloth for AAU meets and vinyl dipped foam for class. two organizations 2 sets of rules. i PREFER the cloth covered foam( probably what you mean but cloth sparring gear like shin pads and forearm pads and what not) usually no real washing is needed or even a good idea, you dont wear it long and you dont get too sweaty while sparring ( ok so I do)

cloth is cheaper to get..its ok in protecting you...but gets dirty and starts to smell. The washing process starts break it down thou. Vinyls or leather are better and easier to clean and tend to last longer.

They seem to last fairly well, and yes they can be washed.
