Of course we aren't, we are a product of everything we have been through, our genes, what we have learned, and our self-image. None of these allow for free will or decisions; none of these give you a right to think you have the ability to do what you want when you want.
Even god, according to the Christians and the Bible, doesn't allow for free will, although Christians will claim that it is free will that allows us to make our choices. If they read their Bibles correctly they would realize that the "steps of the righteous man are ordered". Does that mean only the unrighteous have free will? Perhaps it is a throwback from the Garden of Eden where god didn't want people to know the difference between good an evil, so only those who do not submit still have free will?
Being able to decide on your own is a nice thought and a great myth. It makes people liable for their actions and makes them feel like they can actually make a difference in their world and their lives. Too bad there is no argument for free will that can actually hold up against any form of rational discussion.

a good question but difficult to answer! even if there is a higher power one may ask if our destiny predetermined or did god give us a choice? in fact this is one of the main philosophical differences between Shiite Muslims and sonnies. sunnies believe that our destiny is predetermined while shiites argue that since god is just then it would give you a choice! we don't have a choice about the kinds of family and societies we born into. even though one has some choices they are not equal for everyone since some have access to more tools and other facilities than others do. i believe for the most part our destiny is shaped depending on where and in what kinds of societies we are born into! when you plant a seed, its destiny depends on the kinds of food and climate it is povided. peace

No I don't believe we shape our destiny. I believe a "higher power" has some control over our lives.

I believe a little of both. We have the power of free will to choose our destiny. Or, we have the free will to choose God to shape our destiny.

It is a combination of all things that we have contact with in our lives.
If you have certain beliefs in concert with your environment it comes together to form your "Destiny".
