I think you have the most valid question I've seen on the R&S board tonight. Good question. I don't think that rape is tolerated by religion, however I believe it IS something that churches guilty of that sin DO try to cover-up. No one wants to think that such a thing could exist in the house of God. But in order for these churches to continue to survive they have to "sweep it under the rug" so that their followers don't lose faith. They WANT it to appear as an isolated incident. As for WHY it is so rampant, I believe that a vast amount of society has grown so tired of hearing about "gay rights, etc." that we've become tolerant of people that say that nothing is wrong with being homosexual. As the tolerance grows, they feel that if one is caught in this despicible act, the consequences are no longer as humililating as they would have been, say 30 years ago. Back then, if word got out about a priest that had comitted such an act, he probably would have been lynched or would have to have been transferred to another country where his crime was unknown. Now, it seems, one can just say "I'm sorry" and the church pays a lawsuit and nobody does any time. The humiliation is supposed to be enough punishment. Unfortuantely this is not the case. If this weak-handed type of punishment is already anticipated before the crime is committed, then the perpetrator has little to fear. That's why tolerance is such terrible "passive" thing.

It is not rampant but is much rarer than in the rest of clergy and society in general. The Catholic Church has a zero tolerance policy for such sin. As example it is fifteen times more common among Baptist clergy according to the Southern Baptist Convention.
filthy rich,
Do you mean like St. Paul and Jesus?

Fr. Joseph
Morgaine,
Some priests are married as I am a married priest. If celibacy was the cause why is it that Protestant ministers have a higher, much higher incidence of sexual abuse. For your information the guilty priests have been tried and jailed with the help of the Church and lawful authorities. Why do people assume they are not convicted of their crimes. That is just false.

The problem is that many that had those feelings sought refuge in the priesthood, believeing that they would be toaught some great secret to living a celebate life so that they would be able to sublimate their urges. Instead all they found was that they had a steady supply and easy acess to the objects of their desires and eventually they succummed.

Say, buster, in the USA being homosexual is an honor. Don't you read the news ?
About the case of children, that happens in every group of people. Priests just get the biggest propaganda.
Besides, how people that say that they were raped 20 years ago can prove that ? Do they have the penile print in their outlet ?
I have the feeling that frequently this is just a scam from lawyers and people to squeeze money from the church

Sexuality repressed will come out sideways. If Priests were allowed to marry, the priesthood would attract more straight men. As it is, it's the vocation of choice for pedophiles. Lots of access, no family to answer to or spy on you.
You know that this goes high up in the hierarchy of the church and the government because they let the church move these guys all around without punishing them.
All those cases should be turned over to law enforcement and the priests who abuse kids sent to jail.

get ya facts right before spewing out ignorance and hatred.... look up "sodomy"...then ask yourself whether you are guilty of this too.
the priesthood was instituted by God, mock the sinner (if you must) but not the priesthood.
i find it laughable that christians will naturally assume your question applies to the "catholic" priesthood....yet sexual abuse is not exclusive to catholic clergy.
this is just another excuse used by so-called christians to deny the authority given to the Catholic Church to teach in His Name.

God has called us all to give an account for our actions. It is a shame what is happening. I believe this reveals a core flaw with Catholicism. That is, it upholds the dictates of Popes and priests over the clear teachings of the Bible. You can see it in their multitude of errors...

Paul rebuked the church of Corinth for allowing someone to dwell among them who was still actively engaged in sin. The church was thinking itself to be "progressive" or "forgiving" when Paul rightly stated that to allow it to continue in their midst was inexcusable. The individual was feeling justified by the congregation, so he never repented. After the church kicked him out, he saw his error and finally did repent. So why doesn't the Catholic church teach this clear example?
