Many of my friends & I are in the opinion that; what he meant by 'not learned' (when first verses revealed/taught by Jibrail) was that he did not understand/comprehend the verses.

Mohammed(SAW) was illiterate and could not read nor could he write. Also, during the time before he received the message from Jibril he was surrounded by polytheist.. Ummi in Arabic is the word that used to describe Prophet Mohammed(SAW) and this word means illiterate. Also, this was one of the reasons why after the battle of Badr he said to the captives who knew how to read that if one was to teach ten of the Muslim children to read that that person could go free.

The hadith which talks about how Prophet Mohammed(SAW) started to receive teaching from Jibril is
Bukhari volume one book one revelation.....in this hadith it tells us how Prophet Mohammed(SAW) tells Jibril he can not read and how Jibril caught him forcefully and then this is when Prophet Mohammed(SAW) started reading and understand what is written etc...

The Messenger of Allah (saw) was illiterate. Why? Allah S.W.T made the Prophet (saw) illiterate for the cause of Islam. He was revealed with the Holy Qur'an. Then, he preached to the Quraish to accept Islam. Imagine if he was able to read and write. The Quraish would accuse him of writing the Qur'an by himself and made it all up. This is why he was illiterate, to protect the purity of Islam and the Qur'an from accusations. Even he (saw) did not write or record his Hadiths in any forms.

Of all the claims that the Prophet (saw) wrote the Qur'an is a baseless lie. They know the Prophet (saw) was illiterate and they still insist on saying that he wrote the Qur'an. I challenge to all those who said that, to even write one Verse like the Qur'an and show it to any Muslim. You will never ever match the superiority and the purity of the Qur'an.

And how dare they suggest that the Prophet (saw) had a scribe to write down and make up the Qur'an. The Qur'an was revealed to him, not copied from the Taurat or Injil. Some parts of th Qur'an did have the same stories from the previous Scriptures. Yes, and what is that a big deal? The Qur'an does not deny the Taurat of Injil. It is the last Scripture from Allah S.W.T which has been the same Scripture from the time of the Prophet (saw) to the present. Not like the Taurat and the Injil, they were both altered and re-translated for countless of times.

The Prophet (saw) was illiterate. So? That's his speciality in order to protect him from beng accused. It's not a problem not being able to read nor write. As I remind, people in the 17th and 18th century during the Revolution were still not able to read or write for some of them. But they never made a big deal of problem about that.

Prophets who received the Scriptures were illiterate and they are known as "the UIul 'Azmi" such as Musa, Isa, Ibrahim, Dawud, Adam (pbut).

May Allah S.W.T guide us all.

Think his family was in the business of making power, they didnt have to be literate. In those times education was not so reelevant as it is now. As long as u had the camels u were ok...read more about history you will find out that just few people were into science or even in learning how to read or write...it was a different economy

Besides that, Allah can do anything, so if u doubt about the prophet understanding Jibril, u are doubting of Allah Himself...
Salam aleikum

Unlettered means that he could not read or write which was normal in those day s they had their businesses and that needed selling techniques instead.

He (peace and blessings of God be upon him) was brought up by his mother, after his father passed away. He was taught Arabic by the Bedouins and then after his mother died then he was brought up by his grandfather for two years. Then when his grandfather died his uncle Abu talib brought him up, who was a poor man.

To say that the one was given revelation from the heavens did not understand what he was given is absurd and its an insult. The Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) were, like all Prophets, given direct knowledge which is better than all the books in world combined. Please see the link below to explain his knowledge. We have commentary on several verses by him how could explain something what he couldn't understand? This could be a wahabi opinion, not sure.

and from god is all knowing make prophet Muhammad s.a.w as a illiterate person,... ;)

this is the powerful sign of Allah that He want us to think...and I do..

because of prophet Muhammad s.a.w an illiterate, this show that what has been revealed from him to us is directly from the true God,...

its impossible for an illiterate person to read from other sources, like being said by Christian and jew that he copied from bible and Torah to make Al-Quran...

moreover, this make prophet Muhammad as a good listener and highly ability in remembering God's word that been delivered through Jibril, without influence by any reading or books...

you and your friends follow your "Nafs" (= you selves, hearts, opinions). That's why you think that, and I believe you don't read the Hadeeth since there are many accounts that the companions of the porphet explain how he couldn't read and write and that he had people to read for him when he got a letter or something. Fear Allah and follow Islam, not your opinions.

How can people like some answerers here and this question discuss the prophet without fear and limits... just like the non-believers talk about him PBUH. ....Sad

Asslaam-O-Alaikum. From what i be responsive to or i've got heard or study Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) did not have any instructor as such who might coach him the thank you to study and/or write. So confident he substitute into illetrate until eventually Angel Jibrail got here to him with the 1st wahi of Allah. So Allah substitute into the instructor of Prophet. you have stated that Prophet Mohmmad wrote Quran and this it not real. He taught Quran verbally and Quranic verses weren't written down collectively as he substitute into alive. That substitute into something that fluctuate into performed after he died and Abu Bakar substitute into the khalifa at that element. It substitute into performed because of the fact lots of sahaba who memorised Quran from Prophet (PBUH) died in a battlefield and then it substitute into pronounced by potential of Hazrat Umar to Hazrat Abu Bakar to write down Quran, he did so reluctantly because of the fact he did not elect to do something which Prophet (PBUH) did not do himself. it rather is from what i be responsive to and that i could be completely incorrect and Allah knows the suitable.

he was not able to read or write, but that doesn't mean he was retarded. he understood all the ayahs that were revealed to him, and without him, we would be lost, because alot of the ayah in the Qur'an are hard to understand without tafseer, and that's why most non-Muslims who read the Qur'an don't understand it; because it's impossible to understand it without deeper explanation from tafseer.
