The word isn't found in the bible, but the bible says to deaden your "parts". Obviously, masturbation is quite the opposite, so um... biblically you shouldn't do it.

Masturbation was once referred to as the "Sin of Onan" based on a passage from the bible where it stated that, and I'm paraphrasing here, Onan entered into the wife of his brother and so that she did not become with child he spilled his seed upon the ground." This passage was, for centuries interpreted as masturbation. It has, in recent years been decided that he did not, in fact, masturbate, he simply used a birth control method known as withdrawel or in technical vernacular, Coitus Interruptus, and pulled out before he was finished.
Much has been made of the "solitary vice" as it has been termed over the years, but biblically speaking it is not directly referred to in any way that scholars have been able to agree upon, or even reference.
More recently it has been labled as sinful because it is still considered a sexual act and ANY sexual act that is other than between a husband an wife is labled as sinful in some circles.
So, to answer your question, it is a sin in one perspective, and not a sin in others.

OK, I have answered this question many times before. Catholics will tell you it is a sin and will use the story of Onan as an example (Read Gen 38:7-9). They err in that Onan did not masturbate, he lay with his brother's wife to provide an heir for his brother as the law demanded, but refused to provide the heir! He had the pleasure of the act, but would not provide a child because he did not want to have to share the inheritance, this has nothing to do with masturbation. Masturbation is discussed in Lev 15:15-19. If you have the seed of copulation on you, then you are considered unclean, must wash, remain unclean until evening and then you are clean again. Being unclean is NOT a sin. All sin requires a sacrifice. Being unclean simply means that you cannot enter the temple until you are clean (you were also considerd unclean if you touched a carcass, but it is not sinful to touch a carcass). The sin comes in the thoughts that you have during masturbation. If you are thinking about your wife...no sin. If you are thinking about someone other than your wife...sin. If you are not married and are thinking about a particular woman, then you are lusting after her and that is a sin. The sin is the thoughts you have, not in the act itself.

If you have ‘ Nocturnal Emissions ‘ , you become unclean and should stay away from holy places for a few days. Of course , Jews never masturbated , so that is why there is no mention of it in the Bible. Women were far more accessible in those days , they were the property of men . These days Rape has been replaced with masturbation , Good news for the girls , Bad news for the boys.

Some religious groups consider it to be a sin. Judaism considers masturbation to be tantamount to "Onanism." Onan was a man who, after his brother died childless, took his brother's wife as his wife, as the law commands. However, rather than get her with child, he "spilled his seed" and refused to have relations with her. He's considered a bad example. It's not really a big issue, though, except (perhaps) among Orthodox Jews; I don't think my rabbi is going to be offering a sermon on it any time soon, at any rate :-)
That aside, as far as I know, there's no other reference to masturbation in the Torah. If someone knows of another, I hope they'll post it.

I dont know, firsthand, if this topic is discussed in the bible or the torah....it may be a "sin" but it sure does feel good. Who gets hurt when you masturbate in the privacy of your own home? I suppose it MAY be a sin because no one has figured out how to tax it yet.

Ok for those who misinterpret the bible, Onan was NOT punished for the act of masturbation...He was punished for disobeying god...Therefore I must preach my brothers, that masturbation is not a sin, so sit back relax, and spank the monkey

There have been debates on this topic. Some say it is ok, while others say it is a sin.
Most will say the act itself is not a sin, but the thoughts that go along with it are. Since the thoughts are normally adulterous.

I think it's a lot better to do that than have sex with the wrong person and possibly cause unwanted pregnancy, catch a disease, or just make the other person feel used because you needed relief. Now that would be sinful (in my opinion).

If spilling your seed is a sin, then logically it would only be a sin for men to masturbate, not women. Any staunch non seed spillers care to comment?
