hang darker fabric on the walls, from pressure rods, or hang huge art work to cover those white walls
Make small groupings of furniture, and dont push the furniture up against the walls of the room.
Use carpets, pillows, fabrics, etc to add texture and interest to the room.

Use orange and red colours, use a lot of candles, throw rugs and cushions. Try to find prints with sunsets or other images with lots of warm colours to complement the theme. Buying lenghts of fabric in a warm colour and draping them over an ornate curtain rod attached to the wall can also add to making the space feel more enclosed.

...I have a large living space too and what I've done is use my furniture to break up the space...like the couch in the middle with an easy chair and then book shelves and desk etc. in another area...used like room dividers...large area rugs (even over carpeting)...separate rugs for different divided areas...large wall coverings, table lamps with different styles and different wattage...

The lighter shades are the best way to go. The light reflects off of them making the room look bigger. The darker the color, the smaller the room will look. It will also be a happier atmosphere if you have the brighter colors. Dark seems to be more depressing.
