When I first entered the Army there were pin up girls in most barracks, then they dissolved the Wacs.
Oops there went the pinups from the walls, and the ones in the lockers close behind.
Sexual harassment unfortunately was and is real in the military, and I guess Porn was on the firing line as part of it.
I really want to blame the Liberals but in this case I have to admit it was just going to happen.

There are so amny other important things to worry about than why we as soldiers can't have porn. The fact is that when you sign the dotted line, you are agreeing to live life at higher level than most citizens. You may lose some of your freedoms but its worth it. A soldier in Iraq has plenty to do without porn. Additionally, the military has an extreme zero tolerance policy on sexual harrasment and respecting others. Many people would find a man/woman watching porn in an open bay inappropriate. You also have to remember that when we as American Soldiers are in another country, for whatever reason, we must respect the religious beliefs and way of life in that country. The military puts policies in place for a reason and you probably dont understand that because you are not a soldier. Im sure that although your friend may have been discussing the matter with you, he understands the principles behind the policy. Next time you may want to get more info from your friend than post a question like this because your going to recieve a lot of negative feedback. Aside from all of that, I feel the need to say Thank you for supporting our troops.

Congress outlawed selling sexually explicit material because of pressure from both religious groups and various women's organizations. Religious groups are now pushing for a further ban on magazines that they consider sexually explicit based on their standards.
I think you'll find I often go to bat for people and their right to their religious beliefs when they are being unnecessarily attacked by the liberals. However, in this case, the government should tell the religious groups to **** off and mind their own business.
The restriction applies to bases here in the United States and overseas. I'm all for the ban when the material is banned in the country where we are stationed. However, the imposition of the ban for any other reason is censorship and a violation of the First Amendment rights of our military. The PX is a self supporting organization funded by the purchases made therein. As such it is not receiving government funds which suggests that Congress should keep their collective noses out of what is sold there. When the original ban was imposed, I believe you will find that the religious organizatons were also complaining about the sale of condoms in military exchanges.
Edit for wisemancumth: How many police officers are forced to live in the police station? We're not talking just about work place displays which are inappropriate anywhere. If the barracks is their home, what they hang inside the door of their locker is neither your business nor mine.
Edit for USMC wife: My wife was with me for 13 of my 20 years in the Army and she agrees with me. The opinion of spouses who are not serving members of the military should count for very little when it comes to what is stocked in the exchange. Personally, I believe it should be totally ignored, but that is just an opinion. I lived in substandard barracks for the first 7 years I was in the Army. Open bays and pot belly, gravity fed, diesel fired stoves. Nothing like getting up at 0600 in the morning in a building where the temperature is just about freezing. Go outside and lug in a 5 gallon can of diesel so you can get some heat after you fire up the stove. Ah, the luxury of living in quonset huts and porta-camp buildings. The opinion of military wives meant absolutely squat to me then and it remains that way today.

Most exchanges I have been to have an upper shelf of some adult magazines. You weren't allowed to get a playboy subscription but you could buy it from the exchange. Two bases I lived on didn't care if you had naked girls all over the wall or if you left your stash of porn out. It makes sense to ban it from public areas and in certain countries though. Don't want to offend anyone.

Why does the card.....if I can die for my country then why can't I...Always get played?
Get over it already you signed on the dotted line obey the rules it won't kill you not to drink until your 21 or not watch porn on base. If you don't like the rules get out or don't sign. When your service is over watch all the porn you want and drink your life away. Geez my children whine less about rules then some soldiers. Kids are growing up in a world now of give it to me... give it to me...I want it...I deserve it...just do it...no rules. It's tragic they feel they deserve porn and beer for their service. Would they be screaming this loud if they said no Bibles. I doubt it.

What next? you want to cry about, the fact that they cant buy drugs in the P.X.??
By the way, For Bite My Shiny Medal:
when a door of a soldiers locker is opened the contents are on public display. All items including the person who owns the locker are property of the military and subject to their rules.
If you don't like it don't join.

Because there are women in the Military, and the Military has a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment. Sounds silly to most people, but soldiers can't even have pin-up posters in their own rooms, not even the snap-on tools calendar that used to hang in the motor pool maintenance bay. And this was in a combat arms unit that had no female members. And you can surf porn on government recreational computers either. We can't drink alcohol or even fly the American Flag on our own bases in Iraq. Pretty soon, they won't let em have guns either. Someone might get hurt!

You can't dwell on what's going on in Iraq, so you worry about porn? Stateside, there are plenty of places off base where they can buy porn, trust me. In Iraq, their religion dictates porn is banned, so our military abides by that. Trust me though, they have porn on PSP's and other things while in Iraq.

Wow... of all the things to care about... what does it matter? The rules against porn in Iraq is because of the religious beliefs of that country. As far for on the base, where they would buy it is also where families are shopping... it's just a no no. So what if they have to go off base to get it?
