Is private interpretation of the Bible condoned in the Bible Itself? No, it is not (2 Peter 1:20). Was individual interpretation of Scripture practiced by the early Christians or the Jews? Again, "NO" (Acts 8:29-35). The assertion that individuals can correctly interpret Scripture is false. Even the "founder" of Sola Scriptura (Martin Luther), near the end of his life, was afraid that "any milkmaid who could read" would found a new Christian denomination based on his or her "interpretation" of the Bible. Luther opened a "Pandora's Box" when he insisted that the Bible could be interpreted by individuals and that It is the sole authority of Christianity. Why do we have over 33,000 different non-Catholic Christian denominations? The reason is individuals' "different" interpretations of the Bible.

Now, in the case of Catholics, the Church which Christ founded and is with forever (Matthew 28:20) interprets the Bible, as guided by the Holy Spirit, (Mark 13:11) for the "sheep" (the faithful). The Church (not individuals) interpret Scripture. In Catholicism, Scripture is there for meditation, prayer and inspiration, not for individual interpretation to formulate doctrine or dogma.

Probably not many, comparatively speaking.

I am reasonably well educated regarding the history of the Bible's creation, so I look at it as more a collection of fables and propaganda pieces with some philosophical essays and letters mixed in.

I think it does contain writings of value and beauty, but I also think it is something that should not be read without an accompanying rigorous instruction in the history of its authorship and creation. People need to be taught to distinguish between what is fable and allegory and what is rational thought and philosophy.

I am Catholic, by the way, not an atheist, though some might consider my views about the Bible similar to theirs.

the bible is highly repetative, if it talks about something important its probably something that has been presented in a number of different ways throughout the scripture. If you examine the interpretation in the context of what has been stated before and/or after you'll have yourself a fairly conhesive idea of what is being stated. If you read the old testement, many of the prophets predict what is to come in the new testement.

Keep in mind that the scholars who had memorized the torah, as they called the old testement, had all of this information and still didn't recognise Christ for who he was. Thus, the lesson is that if your heart isn't in it, what is laid out by the scripture isn't going to penetrate your thick skull.

I read the Recovery Version of the Bible, an interpreted Bible. I just enjoy reading it. It a Bible to understand the Bible.

Every person interprets the bible at least somewhat differently from the next person.

Each religion often has major interpretation differences from other religions.

Wars have been fought over differing interpretations with each side believing that God is on their side.

Pretty silly, actually.

Probably not many, but hey that is ok, as god created me unique and all interpretations are allowed, leading to healthy discussions on the bible.

Quite a few. I write about the Bible/Christianity quite a bit, and I find that a lot of people agree with me.
