ok, yeah, i understand that they might represent ideals different from yours, but really? not one of those books promotes or encourages anything directly against Christianity. or, i suppose, that's my opinion anyway, and i guess you'res might be different, which is the point of this question anyway. none of those books claim to have even the smallest foundation of fact; they are believe it or not, all categorized as "fiction". as in, not true, as recognized byt he author, publisher, and general public. why are these different from any other fiction books? i'm mostly looking for the viewpoints of other Christians but i also welcome the viewpoints of others. please, no senseless bashing of either Christians or of the books if you have somehtign to say make it reasonable and support it

It comes to what you said yourself, personal opinions. However, with the Da Vinci code, Dan Brown did in fact put in the begining of his book a line that states that his finding were facts. Now some of them were and some of them were "what if". So there was a real fine line that he crossed. It comes down to security in what one really believes. if one is confident and secure in that belief, then there is no need to "bash" anyone else for the superiority. The ones that want to take away the imaginations of others are those that are real insecure with what they believe and are more than likely those "boderline Christians". One that just want to go to the border of what God really says.

God has given us an imagination to enjoy and promote wonder and amazement. He allows us the inventivness and ability to produce and display that. He does ask us to be responsible with what we do, also. I guess that is the other borderline that have so many get offended. Shoot, you think a decision on a movie like Harry Potter is bad? Imagine the uproar at one of the interdenominational meetings when someone interjected whether or not Jesus had a belly button? HA HA I could only imagine, can you? If you can, then let it soar!

God Bless!

The Harry Potter books make witchcraft seem to be a normal way to live. In the Bible, it is a sin.

The Da Vinci Code claims to be fiction, but it is presented so that it sounds as though it is fact.

Both this book series and book are dangerous to weak minds.

I know nothing about the last book.

Books that are listed as fiction can still be allegories or meant to teach a lesson. Think 'Aesop's Fables.'
Personally, I have no problem with 'Harry Potter' because it does not try to any teaching but to provide entertainment. The 'DaVinci Code', while it proposes to be a work of fiction, claims to have a historical basis. And the "history" it claims about the Catholic Church and other things is false.
The 'Golden Compass' is one of a trilogy and it is clearly anti-Catholic presenting the Church in the worst possible light.
If you set out to attach someone or something I love, then I am against you, or rather, you are already against me.

The above named books are hardly in the same category.

1) Objectors to the Potter books are simply ignorant. They believe that the books are full of real witchcraft. As a believer and a Potter mega-fan, I see Christian values all through the books.

2) The other two blatantly set themselves as foes of Christianity and the scriptures. The Da Vinci Code is only a laughable regurgitation of a oft and easily debunked theory.

The other is an attempt to indoctrinate children and as such is a very hostile attack. Therefore the resistance is justified.

I don't mind when Christians are against things, I just don't like when they try to have them censored or picked a movie or something. I mean, the most embarrassing thing in history is when they picketed and tried to have The Last Temptation of Christ taken out of the theaters.

They were angry because it didn't agree with the gospels. Well no **** it didn't. That was kind of the point wasn't it. I mean, that it was somebody else take on god. Guess what guys, people are allowed to have those.

What they're afraid of is that these tales will categorize the pagan beliefs as fun or interesting and that their children, because they've had religion stuffed down their throats from day one, will exercise free will and pursue an investigation into something that gives them pleasure. Psychologically, in my opinion, their own grip on their beliefs is shaky, and when you aren't sure about your side of the story, you recruit others to your cause, bolstering your beliefs by being part of a group that follows the same thought line. When one is absolutely confident, one needs no one to stand for them, as their beliefs stand on their own. Even J.C. knew that, regardless of whether he was the S.O.G., and he knew that holding that firmly to that ideal was the only way to absolutely convince anyone that he believed what he did with every ounce of his being.

Because they've been taught that people are actually dumb enough not to know that HP and Da Vinci Code is fiction.

Harry Potter - promotes witchcraft
DaVinci Code - belief that Jesus was married, had kids, debunks the standard of the Bible.
Golden Compass series - children "kill off God" in the finale. Written by an atheist with hatred to destroy Christianity foundational beliefs.

And you wonder why a Christian would not appreciate these books

As a man thinks, so is he. They can write as fiction, but this is in their heart.

I don't know, like you said they are fiction. It is only when stupid people try to hold them out to be factual that it angers people. I think that is especially true of the Da Vinci code. There are some people who don't realize it is fiction.

Because with their narrow minds, Christians have a set belief system, no ideas. Anything that they do not agree with is almost heresy to them. Even though they are just stories and support no real fact, the Christians want everyone to believe as they do.
People worry too much about what's not suitable for Children in books but they have no problem with their kids imitating Paris Hilton or rappers.
The problem with today's society is that people spend too much time sheltering their children and shoving fairy tale endings down their throats only to let them find out on their own later about the unrealities of life.
But do the Christians stand up to the fact that their belief system nearly annihilated Native Americans? They truly hated Native Americans for their belief in the great spirit and found it not to be like theirs and in turn, was all for killing them off.
