No religion took hold during that time. All of Europe was locked down by the catholic church. Thats why its called the "dark ages", anyone who tried to let some truth in was executed.

FEAR just as others have mentioned; it was in the guise Catholicism.
Nowadays FEAR is dressed in nicer clothes but it's still FEAR.

It's why xianity always (and still does) worked so well on gullible peasants.
