i've heard stories about how the Catholic Church used to be fire and brimstone and extremely strict before the Second Vatican Council. i heard that the church was very unforgiving and priests used to scold the laity in confession and sacred a lot of faithful. i'm curious to know how strict was the Catholic Church before the changes from the Second Vatican Council?
